2 ½       cups all-purpose flour
½          cup white sugar
½          cup molasses
1           egg
2           teaspoons ginger
1           tablespoon vinegar
1           teaspoon baking powder
1           teaspoon cinnamon
½          teaspoon cloves
½          teaspoon baking soda

Directions
In a mixing bowl, beat shortening with an electric mixer on medium to high speed for 30 seconds.  Add about half the flour, the sugar, molasses, egg, ginger, vinegar, baking powder, cinnamon, cloves, and baking soda.  Beat until thoroughly combined, and then beat in remaining flour.  Cover and chill for 3 hours or until dough is easy to handle.

Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Divide the chilled dough in half.  On a lightly floured surface, roll out half the dough to ¼ inch thick.  Cut into desired shapes with cookie cutters or a knife.  Place 1 inch apart on a baking sheet covered with parchment.  Bake for 5-6 minutes or until edges are lightly browned.  Cool on a wire rack.

Use Powdered Sugar Icing and add candies or sprinkles to decorate as you like.
